Cybersecurity is crucial for the physical and financial security of every person in the nation. Recently, the Biden-Harris Administration, operating under Executive Order 14028, established the first Cyber Safety Review Board (CSRB). We recently sat down with cybersecurity service ImageQuest to find out more.
Q: Why is cybersecurity so important?
ImageQuest: The vast majority of business, government, and personal activities take place over the internet and the Cloud. As such, the digital assets passed between servers must be protected. Until now, the US lacked any authoritative organization that could review and determine how breaches occurred. You can think of it as a cybersecurity service that reviews potential threats on a national scale and helps to quell future digital intrusions.
Q: What spurred the formation of the CSRB?
ImageQuest: National cybersecurity has been a hot topic for many years. However, in late 2021, a critical vulnerability of the Log4j open source event-logging software was discovered. Hackers can exploit Log4j to not only steal data but to also force targeted computer systems to perform undesirable actions or to take control of these systems entirely.
Q: Who will govern this new board?
ImageQuest: The CSRB is unique in that it will feature both government and private sector leaders who will consult and advise the president and Secretary of Homeland Security directly. There are 15 highly-qualified individuals appointed to the board, including Google Senior Director Heather Adkins and DHS Under Secretary for Policy Robert Silvers. Each has extensive experience in the cybersecurity service industry and is an expert in their respective fields.
Q: How will the Cyber Safety Review Board affect individuals on a day-to-day basis?
ImageQuest: For the most part, the CSRB will operate much like other review boards in the nation. The vast majority of people likely won’t hear anything from them unless there is a report, new threat, or new solution unveiled. Representatives from the organization will release information (taking care to protect confidential data) to the general public as appropriate.
According to representatives from the cybersecurity service firm, the CSRB is based on the NTSB, which investigates significant transportation accidents. Ultimately, the board should help to improve cybersecurity throughout the United States so that the government can better protect information and systems that should never make their way into the wrong hands.
