Working for a fashion magazine is a dream for many young women, including Mallory Fleming. The 18-year-old fashionista knows that the job can be glamorous, but also demanding. Magazine writers tend to work long hours, says Mallory Fleming, but there are also plenty of perks such as attending Fashion Week and looking at fabulous clothes. Working for a fashion magazine requires good writing skills, but also an eye for fashion. “I have always enjoyed reading fashion magazines since I was a little girl,” says Mallory Fleming. According to Mallory Fleming, who currently works part time at Abercrombie & Fitch, fashion magazines have given her the inspiration for the style she has today. Mallory Fleming researched the necessary steps to landing a fashion dream job.

Write, Write, Write

For those still in high school, it’s not too early to start. Taking creative writing or journalism classes is definitely a great way to learn skills. According to Mallory Fleming, who is enrolled in a journalism class at her high school, these courses can be an interesting way to express oneself on any given topic. A blog is an excellent way to promote writing and fashion skills. Popular bloggers can land jobs in fashion journalism or at least an internship.

Intern, Intern, Intern

Mallory Fleming knows that getting an internship is absolutely crucial to a career in fashion. Interning is one measure not to be missed since magazines prefer to hire interns rather than outside people. Internships are great for college students; they usually don’t pay, but most give college credit. Some talented students are fortunate enough to land internships while still in high school. Lauran Conrad, for example, has started her fashion career as an intern for Teen Vogue. Today, Conrad is a mini fashion mogul designing fashion and beauty products. “Lauren Conrad has been an inspiration of mine since she worked with Teen Vogue,” says Mallory Fleming, who hopes to get an internship with a successful fashion magazine in college and perhaps write an article or two for the magazine. Most fashion internships are in cities like New York and Los Angeles. Mallory Fleming hopes to move there someday.

Mallory Fleming is headed down the right path, determined to learn every aspect of the fashion business.
