According to Dr. Naveed Fazlani, many people associate high cholesterol with adults who are middle-aged or older. But Dr. Fazlani reports that he has been seeing more cases of cholesterol issues in children, young adults and teens. Whether the increase is due to rising obesity rates, or because testing is more common are possible factors contributing to the upswing.

Starting in 2008, the Centers for Disease Control revised their guidelines and recommended that children whose parents suffer from high cholesterol should be tested as well, reports Dr. Naveed Fazlani. They also recommend screenings for children suffering from obesity. Dr. Naveed Fazlani, who was Physician of the Year 2004 Mercy Hospital in Mt. Airy, suggests several treatment options for young people with high cholesterol. Like many of his colleagues, the first thing that Dr. Naveed Fazlani suggests is lifestyle modifications for children. Eating foods that are low in saturated fat and trans fat is important to maintaining overall health, as well as maintaining healthy cholesterol levels.  Dr. Naveed Fazlani also notes that the oils in some fish are known to actually lower cholesterol.
