The Balancing Act Lifetime

The Balancing Act Lifetime

If you’re a dog parent, we bet you didn’t know that shorthaired breeds can shed as much as long haired ones; and many pet owners think that shaving a dog down can actually reduce and help with the shedding.  Joining The Balancing Act Lifetime is a very special man who is going to shed some light on great techniques and tools that will really keep your pooch happy and healthy.  As part of our “Pet Parenting” series, once again, we have Chris Lee.  He is a wonderful dog lover – and a professional groomer.

The Balancing Act Lifetime: Good morning and welcome back.

Chris Lee: Thank you.

The Balancing Act Lifetime: It’s good to see you, again.  So, who is the handsome young man, here?  (Motions to a dog on the ground.)

Chris Lee: This is Rebel.  He’s a beautiful golden retriever.

The Balancing Act Lifetime: He’s gorgeous.

Chris Lee: Thank you, very much.  He is absolutely beautiful, and he sheds.  He sheds a lot.

The Balancing Act Lifetime: I must tell you, I know this breed of dog frequently sheds.  Is shaving him down the right thing to do?  Does it reduce it?

Chris Lee: Actually, it doesn’t.  Shorthair breeds shed just as much as longhair.  So, all you’re doing is cutting a beautiful coat off of a dog.

The Balancing Act Lifetime: So, let me ask you something.  To reduce that shedding and reduce the dander, what about bathing more often?  Is that better?

Chris Lee: Bathing more often is good, when using the proper products; but using a good shedding tool, like the FURminator®deShedding Tool, is your best route to go.

The Balancing Act Lifetime: Oh, really?  And, how does it work?

Chris Lee: It has an edge on it that’s made for longhaired or shorthaired breeds.  It skims through the top of the coat, going down into the bottom; and you can see the hair just start coming out of this dog.

The Balancing Act Lifetime: Oh, my gosh.  Look at that.  It just doesn’t cut the top coat at all.  It’s only taking out the undercoat, and the dead, loose hair that’s coming out of the dog.  I feel like it’s snowing.

Chris Lee: (Laugh).  Yeah.  It’s an amazing tool.  It works incredibly well.

The Balancing Act Lifetime: And, it doesn’t hurt Rebel at all?

Chris Lee: Doesn’t hurt at all.  As you can see, it’s not harming him, not bothering him, it’s not cutting the top of the hair; so he stills looks as beautiful as he always does.  It just pulls the dead, loose hair, undercoat, out of the dog.

The Balancing Act Lifetime: Now, I must say.  When I see this, I become a little concerned, because my daughter suffers from allergies.  How can I avoid this from being, you know, everywhere in the house?

Chris Lee: Well, the FURminator® has a vacuum accessory; so it sucks all of the hair straight into your vacuum cleaner, instead of it being airborne in your house.

The Balancing Act Lifetime: How do you connect it to the vacuum?

Chris Lee: Oh, it’s simple.  The FURminator® tool actually just fits inside the vacuum accessory; and the hose of the vacuum fits onto the accessory.  Then, when you’re ready as you’re FURminating your dog, you push the hair eject button, and it sucks it right into the vacuum cleaner.

The Balancing Act Lifetime: Now, let me ask you, also.  A lot of people don’t have golden retrievers.  They have, maybe, shorthaired breeds. Can I use this, also, for shorthaired ones?

Chris Lee: Works exactly the same.

The Balancing Act Lifetime: Last question: How many times can I do this to my pooch?

Chris Lee: You can do it weekly.  The more you do it, at first, the less you have to do it later on.  Because you’re helping your dog to have better skin and a better coat.

The Balancing Act Lifetime: Excellent information.  Thank you, so much, Sir.

Chris Lee: No problem.

The Balancing Act Lifetime: I really appreciate it. And, thank you, Rebel.  You’re gorgeous!

Chris Lee: Appreciate it.
