Q & A with Matt Schilit: Using iPads as a School Administrator
Matt Schilit
Matt Schilit is a longtime school administrator, having served as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal. In his current position with the Allendale County School District, Matt Schilit leads all data, evaluation, and testing. Since testing is an integral part of a school’s funding, it is important for school systems to find a leader with extensive experience in the classroom environment. Recently, Matt Schilit took time to answer a few questions about his work.
Q: Matt Schilit, what is the key to staying organized as a school administrator?
Matt Schilit: Well, keeping track of my schedule is always a challenge but it’s essential to do so. Recently, I’ve started using an iPad and have found it to be an incredibly useful and versatile tool for enhancing productivity.
Q: How do you use your iPad during the school day?
Matt Schilit: I have found that it is a great way to stay in touch with both my staff and the outside world with the communication apps like Skype and Google Talk. I can be in touch with all my teachers instantly, as well as everybody else by email.
Q: How about keeping on top of your office and admin duties?
Matt Schilit: With applications like Dropbox, Google Docs, and Docs to Go, I have access to all my professional documents stored in the Cloud. I can read and write letters and email on the go, plus access any other official documents I need.
Q: How does a school administrator keep up with what’s going on in the field of education?
Matt Schilit: I firmly believe a successful school administrator – or really, any aspiring school administrator must be a member or members of key professional organizations. For my state of South Carolina, I recommend SCASA (South Carolina Association for School Administrators) and nationally I recommend ASCD. Both offer excellent professional development opportunities throughout the year and should be a must-join for any educator.
