Pittsburgh’s Joe Zanotti Works to Increase Volunteerism

According to Joe Zanotti, the Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported that the number of Americans who perform volunteer work has dropped slightly. Despite these reports, native Pittsburgh resident Zanotti hopes that more people will experience the same joy he found while volunteering.

Joe Zanotti has volunteered with the Pittsburgh Family House, where people stay while their loved ones are undergoing treatment at nearby hospitals. The Pittsburgh Family House is a warm and reasonably priced place for families, says Zanotti, and has been serving the community since 1983.  At the Family House, volunteers such as Joe Zanotti help to greet families, answer questions, and assist in day-to-day operations. And there are scores of organizations like the Family House who are looking for help from community members, points out Zanotti. The work isn’t arduous, but in organizations like this it’s the small things that help it to succeed. Volunteers are needed who can sort mail, answer the phone, distribute linens or simply talk with families. And, as Joe Zanotti know first hand, each person really does make all the difference.
