Since 2005, Dr. Paul Edward Perito MD has been offering the Coral Gables region a revolutionary treatment for erectile dysfunction. As word spreads of the work Dr. Paul Edward Perito MD and his staff at Perito Urology are doing, Dr. Paul Edward Perito MD is often called upon to train other doctors on his minimally invasive penile implant procedure. Today he discusses the treatments he provides.

Q: Dr. Paul Edward Perito MD, what treatments are available?

Dr. Paul Edward Perito MD: In addition to Viagra and similar pharmaceutical treatments, there are injections and suppositories that have had some success in treating erectile dysfunction. Perito Urology specializes in a non-invasive penile implant procedure that allows patients to resume the lifestyle they had before erectile dysfunction.

Q: Dr. Paul Edward Perito MD, what are penile implants?

Dr. Paul Edward Perito MD: A penile implant is surgically implanted beneath the skin, similar to a breast implant, only with different functionality. There are several types of implants, including malleable and inflatable. The malleable implant has a manual mechanism but the problem with that type of implant is that the penis doesn’t deflate. This can be uncomfortable for some patients. We recommend the inflatable implant, which operates using a pump inserted in the patient’s scrotum.

Q: Dr. Paul Edward Perito MD, can you describe the inflatable implant? Would a man’s sexual partner be aware he had one?

Dr. Paul Edward Perito MD: My minimally invasive procedure involves making a small incision above the patient’s penis, which leaves little to no scarring. The device that is most popular with our patients is the Coloplast TITAN®, which is not only placed beneath the skin but feels and looks genuine.

Q: What kind of recovery time can a patient expect after surgery, Dr. Paul Edward Perito MD?

Dr. Paul Edward Perito MD: Many of our patients are able to resume normal sexual activity in as little as four to six weeks. This can, of course, vary from patient to patient, but it’s important to note that the patient’s pain is less than other implant procedures both during the operation and afterward.

Q: Dr. Paul Edward Perito MD, what do you do differently that makes the procedure so much less invasive?

Dr. Paul Edward Perito MD: By making a small incision, patients have a smaller number of stitches. My procedure is based on limited dissection, which helps reduces recovery time and pain for the patient.  Unlike orthopedic implants, our patients resume normal life in 4 to 6 weeks.

Q: Is this procedure covered by insurance, Dr. Paul Edward Perito MD?

Dr. Paul Edward Perito MD: While we can’t guarantee coverage, Medicare covers many of these surgical procedures. Our staff can work with patients to make sure procedures are covered and discuss costs before the operation is scheduled.
