Community Blog: Aldo Disorbo, tell us how you got involved with the Boys & Girls Clubs.

Aldo Disorbo: I was floored when I first learned of the number of children in our area without Christmas presents. I feel like there is nothing worse than a child’s cry for help.

Community Blog: That is so true. What was your first move?

Aldo Disorbo: Well, I came up with a plan. This holiday season my company and I are fulfilling the Christmas wish list of 10 children at our local Boys & Girls Club. We got their complete wish lists and donated all the toys they wanted.

Community Blog: What else did you do?

Aldo Disorbo: We also got them new clothes for the new year. Then a week before Christmas, my employees and I personally delivered the gifts. That was the best part—the personal interaction.

Community Blog: We heard there was a Santa Claus appearance?

Aldo Disorbo: Well, I love to play Santa so l got out the red suit!

Community Blog: Aldo Disorbo, why do you feel such a desire to reach out in this way?

Aldo Disorbo: Well, this community has been good to our business, and we are constantly looking for new and different ways to give back. We recognize the importance of spotlighting special organizations like the Boys & Girls Club of Broward.

Community Blog: They are a volunteer-based organization, are they not?

Aldo Disorbo: That’s right. These volunteers are doing great things for the community by donating their time as well as gifts and money.

Community Blog: Aldo Disorbo, tell us more about the Boys & Girls Club.

Aldo Disorbo: The Boys & Girls Clubs of America have changed millions of children’s lives for the better since it was founded in 1860. Many have benefited from these clubs, including vast amounts of volunteers.

Community Blog: Whom do the clubs serve?

Aldo Disorbo: They primarily serve underprivileged children. Lots of kids today face more challenges than ever before. Drugs, peer pressure, gangs and single parent homes are common in many neighborhoods. The disadvantages of poverty, unemployment and poor education add considerable stress to households.

Community Blog: How do the clubs try to meet the kids’ needs?

Aldo Disorbo: A Boys & Girls Club is a place to get away from life’s temptations and negative pressures. It’s a safe place where children can relax and enjoy themselves. Programs and services focus on health, physical education, recreation and education.

Community Blog: What kind of education?

Aldo Disorbo: Children can learn about leadership, citizenship development, and cultural enrichment, as well as receive personal counseling.

Community Blog: Aldo Disorbo, why do you feel the need to get involved?

Aldo Disorbo: In order for the Boys & Girls Club to continue carrying out its mission, to positively impact the lives of thousands of children, they’ve got to have volunteers. We stepped up.
